Top 5 Work Perks People Want in Australia

Top 5 Employee Perks People Want

How do we decide on which business we want to work for? It is never an easy decision but let us be real, perks stand out. The more businesses offer, the more enticing it is for us to want to join. But what makes people tick? What are the perks that get people excited enough to jump through the hoops required to get the job? There is no such thing as one glove fits all when it comes to perks, the reality is, they just do not suit everyone.  So, you must ask yourself, what really matters to you when searching for a business? If you had a choice to choose perks that would make you happy or better your life, what would it be? To give you some help, there are the top 5 perks people want in Australia.

Work Perk #1: Flexible working hours

No surprise really. Times have changed so much so that the normal 9 am-5 pm is not exactly exciting. People have lives outside of work and frankly, the normal 9 am-5 pm does not allow us to truly live and people are starting to make that known to employers. While the 9 am-5 pm is still the norm, many businesses are providing more flexibility due to the demand.

Work Perk #2: Working from home

Working from home is continuously growing more popular in Australia with more businesses adopting a work-life balance scheme and so they should. The main priority for 70% of job seekers in Australia is finding an organization with flexible working conditions, heavily favoured towards working from home. In today’s world, a business that does not offer such flexibility is being left behind.

Work Perk #3: Development Opportunities

People leave organizations because there are just no development opportunities for them to grow, it is no secret, it happens every day. In fact, most people think that joining a large organization will have more development opportunities than a small business. Sorry to burst people’s bubble, but on most occasions, this is not actually correct. Due to the broadness of roles in a small business, opportunities are more readily available.  If this is one of your priorities, don’t think big is always the best.

Work Perk #4: A safe & authentic culture

You might be thinking to yourself, what does this even mean? Well, if you have been following our blogs, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. People are forever searching for an authentic culture where they can truly be themselves without the fear of being judged or criticized. This includes being able to open up about how they feel in the workplace such as raising concerns. What appears to be great from the outside may not be so good once you get on the inside. Do your research before applying for a position.

Work Perk #5: Health Insurance

This may not necessarily be on your top 5 perk list but believe it or not, most Australians value an attractive health insurance package. Private health is expensive so when an organization offers what is a benefits package, it’s difficult to look the other way. This isn’t a reason to join a company alone, but it does speak volumes about their values, doesn’t it?

Perks are what attracts people to work for organizations, it is important to know what you want and to find what you’re looking for. At the end of the day, it is not just a job, it’s our livelihood and we deserve to be happy. We’re picky as humans when we look at many aspects of our lives, but when it comes to jobs, many of us don’t take it seriously enough. A happy workplace has a positive impact on your life both in and outside of work. Next time you’re looking for a new job, really look. Look beyond the salary, ask the questions, and apply for jobs for those businesses that you truly want to work for. Don’t apply blind.
