Attracting the right people to your business is no small task, by any means. Finding the right people for the role is far beyond a system identifying whether they would be a good fit based on their qualifications and experience. Their personalities, attributes, and values play an important part in determining whether they would be a good fit for the role and organization, something many businesses tend to take for granted. Not to mention, how they perform during the beloved interview stage.
But even if you’re a business that has amazing perks, great wages, the Christmas party, modern office, and facilities, getting the right people to show interest in your role, let alone getting them through the door is a lot harder than you think. I’m sure the performance of your job ads is a clear indication.
On that, let’s take a look at some of the key reasons why you’re not attracting the best employees;
1. Are your job descriptions fun and exciting, or dull and unappealing?
The primary focus of a job ad is to get the right people to see it and apply for it. But how are you writing your job ads? Do you stick to the facts or are you outlining the core responsibilities of the job? A job ad is there to sell the job to everyone.
Look at it from a marketing perspective. When you market your business, you outline the reasons why people should use your product or services, the fun exciting things that appeal to people. Jobs ads are no different. If your job ad is boring, why would anyone be excited about working there? Put yourself in the shoes of the candidates. If you read your own job ad and are not immediately engaged or you wouldn’t apply for it, then time to re-write it.
2. You’re not offering a healthy work-life balance (flexible working)
Ever since COVID-19, people have had a taste of what working remotely feels like and the impact it has had on their lives. People certainly appreciate not having to spend hours on a train or in traffic traveling to and from work. That means more time back, whether it’s just to themselves or their family, preparing dinner, or the kids for bed. The most valuable asset in life in time and it’s something we can never get back. It’s why flexible work (working from home) is becoming more and more demanding and an expectation. You are losing a lot of quality talent if your business doesn’t offer it.
3. Are your company reviews letting you down?
Most candidates do quite a bit of research nowaday on organizations before applying for any position, and too right! We all deserve to have a great understanding of the in and outs of an organization before making the decision to apply for a job that will see us spending upwards of 38 hours a week.
If you haven’t already checked, go and check out your company’s review on the main platforms. While no business is perfect, too many negative reviews will certainly deter people from applying. But even if your company has mostly negative reviews than positive, showing candidates that you are actively responding to reviews and showing proof that you are working on ways to improve speaks volumes.
4. Involve employees in the recruiting process
You can never go wrong with a set of fresh eyes and ears. Getting employees involved in the hiring process can benefit you greatly. It gives you a different perspective from a colleague’s perspective and not just from the view of the leader who generally does all the hiring. Not only that, but allowing employees to get involved helps builds a trustworthy culture where people can be more inclusive in some of the bigger decisions made by the organization.
5. Set realistic hiring expectations
Every employer wants the best of the best, but you have to ask yourself, can you really get the best of the best? In other words, if you’re paying an average salary for the role, then chances are you will only get an average employee. This is a common reason why many businesses find themselves stuck in a loop of rejecting applicants because their expectations are far greater than what they have to offer. There’s nothing wrong with reaching for the stars but there will have to be a point in time when you come to terms with either increasing your budget to meet your expectations or lowering your expectations to meet your budget if you’re still on the hunt for a successful candidate.

Remember, finding the right talent is not an easy task by any means of the imagination. Sure, there are plenty of people out there looking for a new role, but how many meet your business needs and are a suitable fit for your business? And of course, visa versa. There are many factors to consider when you’re not having much luck with the hiring process, but it’s important to not give up. The process takes time even for the most reputable businesses around.
